A useful first Hermes installation ends with a repeatable test and a named owner. Downloading an app is only one part of that job. This checklist is for a small-business owner or technical coordinator who wants Hermes Agent running for one modest task, with understandable access and recovery arrangements.

The practical outcome is an installation record: which distribution you chose, where its data lives, who pays for model access, what it can do, and how you verified the result. Technical guidance was reviewed on October 10, 2026. Recheck the linked official instructions immediately before installing.

1. Write the acceptance test first

Choose a task that uses fictional information and produces something a person can inspect. For example, ask for a structured summary of a short sample project brief, including missing information and the exact lines supporting its conclusions. Do not begin by connecting the company mailbox, customer database, and payment system.

Write down three observable pass conditions. The response must use only the sample brief, distinguish missing facts from known facts, and stop after producing the draft. Add one failure case, such as a request to invent an unavailable delivery date. Save the input and expected behavior so another person can repeat the check.

2. Choose one official installation route

Hermes offers complete desktop packages and source-script installations. Desktop bundles include the base runtime; the source route prepares managed dependencies. Current first-party installations use managed Python 3.14, so an old tutorial's system-Python or Node prerequisite should not replace the current guide. The POSIX source route requires Git, curl, tar, and SHA-256 utilities; build and Linux system-library requirements can still apply. Official installation guide.

Record the chosen route before proceeding. A downloaded bundle, a source-built desktop, and a Docker deployment have different maintenance arrangements even when their screens look similar. Prefer the route your operator can explain and maintain. Keep the official download or installation page in the record; avoid commands copied from anonymous troubleshooting posts.

Hermes lists PyPI/uv-tool, Homebrew, and AUR installations as unsupported. Device architecture also matters, particularly for Intel Macs, where official pages currently disagree. Resolve that case against the exact package before proceeding. Platform support.

3. Decide who owns the installation

Use an account appropriate to the work. Identify the person allowed to approve system changes and the person who will operate the agent afterward. On a managed business computer, those may be different people. A setup should not depend indefinitely on an installer's personal account.

Record the application location, selected data location, backup destination, and any separate work folder. Keep the test folder free of personal downloads, unrelated customer files, and credentials. If an installer asks for additional permissions or system packages, understand the specific need rather than approving every prompt to move faster.

Hermes separates managed tools and Python environments from application distribution. Its package-management documentation is useful when identifying what a dependency repair would actually change. Do not improvise repairs by deleting unfamiliar runtime or data directories. Package management.

4. Configure a model and the minimum useful tools

Complete the official first-run setup using an account the owner has approved. Record the provider, model, account owner, and usage controls without copying a secret into the handoff document. Ask what information will leave the computer when the model processes a request. Installing the agent locally does not answer that question.

Use the current setup interface to review tools before the first task. A text-only acceptance test can begin without browser control, messaging, or terminal execution. Add access only when a particular test requires it. The official quickstart provides the current first-conversation path. Hermes quickstart.

Keep technical permissions aligned with the task. An instruction saying “do not send messages” is useful, but a pilot is easier to assess when it has no sending connection in the first place. Treat any later connector as a new access decision with a clear owner and removal procedure.

5. Run diagnostics and repeat the sample task

The installation guide recommends hermes doctor for diagnostics. Review what it reports, retaining only a redacted copy for support. A missing optional feature may not block your text-only pilot; a broken provider connection does. Classify each issue against the acceptance test rather than trying to eliminate every warning through extra installations.

Run the sample twice, including once after closing and reopening the intended interface. Check the configured model, selected profile, output, and any saved files. A successful chat in an administrator's terminal does not establish that the everyday user's desktop setup works.

Fictional example

Maple Sample Studio is a fictional design business testing summaries of invented project briefs. Its coordinator chooses a supported desktop package, uses one approved provider account, and leaves messaging disconnected. The first sample includes an impossible deadline. A passing response identifies the deadline as unresolved and creates a draft summary without contacting anyone. These are planned acceptance criteria, not reported customer results.

6. Finish the handoff checklist

Before using real business information, confirm:

  • The operating system, architecture, package, and installed version are recorded
  • The operator can launch the correct interface and identify the active profile
  • Provider ownership and expected charge categories are understood
  • Only the required tools and work folders are available
  • Normal and failure-case samples have been reviewed
  • The update owner, backup location, and stop procedure are documented

If one item remains unresolved, record the blocker and keep the pilot limited. Bring this checklist and your sample task to InstallAI when discussing a Hermes setup, so the proposed work can be scoped around a verifiable result.
